Chapter 24 starts with Hermes herding the suitors' spirits to Hades. The Suitors' talk about how Odysseus came back and killed them all.
Going back to the real world- Odysseus goes to his father. As soon as he sees him he cries. Odysseus says his name is Eperitus. Laertes pours dust over his head. This is when Odysseus tells him the truth, that he is Odysseus. Laertes wants proof. Odysseus shows him his scar and tells him about the trees Laertes gave him once.
Dolius comes home with his sons.
Rumour the messenger flew throught the town and everyone knows about the Suitors' deaths. They're all mad at Odysseus and they want to kill him. Halitherses defends him but they don't listen. There's then a battle: Ithicans vs. Odysseus' gang and midway Zues and Athene do not want it to go on so Athene tells them to stop. Her voice makes them all stop what they're doing and run away.
